Why choose a rat?
Most people under estimate the intelligence, trainability, cleanliness and sociability or rats.
For children in busy homes they are amazing companions and the kids can teach them all sorts of tricks, clicker/marker training is easy between kids and rats. They also are playful, calm, easy to manage to keep. They do not require near as much work as a dog or cat to keep content.
The up keep for supplies is low in cost and you can still manage to get away a full weekend without worry, or better yet bring the rat(s) along as they travel great and don't make noise or messes! They do get active when the lights first go out at night, often heard playing and crunching on food, some sleep right through the noise and others like myself, prefer to keep the cages in the common areas of my home and out of the bedrooms. ;)
They can be litter box trained, which helps in making clean up time super fast, plus cuts back on cage bedding even much more.
Check out the cool videos below showing the diversity of rats, from trick training to saving lives in Africa detecting landmines and TB in humans!
Rats, one of the most misunderstood animals on the earth today.
Some people prefer starting out with a young rat and look for breeders as they can then see where the rat came from, the parents, often times grand parents and other relatives, plus you have someone to call upon for advise and insight if required. Others may opt for an adult in need that can often be found at our local humane societies. There are many rats needing homes, just as there are kittens and puppies. However some frown upon breeders for this reason, yet there are many positives to getting your rats from a breeder, many more then listed here, just as there are positives to helping out a rat in need. The only real downside to taking in a rat in need is you will not know the history including age and potential health of the rat.

Curious just how smart pet rats are? Much smarter then most would imagine...
